The Vikings travelled over long distances. What made the farmers and merchants from Scandinavia to leave home? How did they navigate? And how did some of them manage to become mercenaries for the emperor of Byzantium?

Follow The Vikings, a large Cooperation Project supported by Creative Europe, launched in Lerwick, Scotland on Friday 10 July. To kick off this 4-year project, 28 delegates (pictured) from all of the 14 partner organisations involved travelled to the Shetland Islands for their first steering committee group and to further develop their planning, having been awarded a grant of of €1,960,000 from Creative Europe earlier in 2015.

Follow the Vikings is a 4 year programme that celebrates Viking heritage throughout Europe with particular emphasis on creativity and culture, including the creation of an international touring event. The project aims to raise the visibility of the Council of Europe’s Viking Cultural Route, managed by the Destination Viking Association and is being funded through a €1.96 million grant from the EU Creative Europe Culture sub-programme. The project has 14 full partners and 11 associate partners over 13 countries.

Destination Viking is a new travel experience concept. Partners from a number of countries have come together to develop a borderless tourism destination focusing on the Viking world.
