PRESENTING THE VIKINGS: THE EUROPEAN PERSPECTIVE”

PROJECT DESCRIPTION:

Follow the Vikings” is a European project with 15 partners from 10 European countries. Promoting and spreading the Viking culture is its main goal, as it constitutes the basis of the European identity, influencing the culture, religion, economy and society between the ninth and the twelfth centuries. The Seminar “Presenting the Vikings: the European perspective” is the second one to be held, according to the project plan.

Catoira is a municipality in Galicia, located in the estuary of Arousa (Pontevedra), where the Romería Vikinga (Viking Festival) has been celebrated every year for 55 years now, as well as many other cultural activities related to the Vikings. The Council of Catoira is a partner of the above mentioned European project and the only Spanish location integrated into the European Viking and Norman Cultural Route.

 

CONTENTS OF THE SEMINAR:

The Seminar aims to address the presentation of the Vikings from a European point of view, through the reflection and analyses about the following topics:

The legacy of the Vikings. Evidences and indications that reveal the presence of the Vikings in different European regions: physical appearance, nomenclature and placenames, DNA, buildings and archaeological remains, special techniques of the Viking Era, legal and social structures, etc.

The image of the Vikings. How the image of the Vikings is interpreted today and how it has been interpreted historically: medieval chronicles, sagas, horns on helmets, use by the Nazis, fashion for re-enactments, arts and Vikings, Up Helly Aa in Shetland, etc.

Navigation and Viking ships. Maritime routes and expeditions, ship building techniques, etc.

Religion, myths, beliefs and rules. Christianization, contact with other religions, slavery, etc.

 

RECEPTION OF PAPERS:

The deadline to send the papers is 29 February 2016. In order to make a presentation, a document must be submitted, including the following information:

-Title
-Summary of the main ideas (200-400 words)

-Brief CV and contact information (address, e-mail, phone number…)

All abstracts will be evaluated and those accepted will be published prior to 29 February 2016.

The supporting material for the presentations will preferably be Power Point and the language will be English or Spanish.
