DESTINATION VIKING
- Capitalizing on Interreg-projects, the Destination Viking concept is now brought forward by the new Destination Viking Association
The Viking Age – a borderless legacy
The legacy of the Viking Age is not a purely Nordic issue. The Vikings and the legacy of the Viking Age can be traced in most European countries as well as in North Africa, Western Asia and North America. In many countries, a Norse legacy lived on for centuries after the end of the Viking Age as such. The Crusades initiated a new ‘Viking Age’, which included Scandinavian crusaders, the Norman expansion in the Mediterranean and the Rus expansion in the East.
Traditionally, the Viking homelands in the Nordic countries have been in the focus for scholars and museums when looking at this exciting epoch of human history. Quite reasonably then, the initiation of international cooperation around the Vikings and their journeys originates from Scandinavia.
The Destination Viking Association will include all those working with any aspect of this broad legacy, be it the Vikings themselves, the Norse and Scandinavian legacy in the North Atlantic, the Norman legacy in the Mediterranean, the Rus of Russia, even the Norman legacy of the Channel Islands and of the UK, all are welcome in the Destination Viking Association!
